I hold such a genuine, motherly concern that my youngest daughter gets enough sleep each night that a few years ago I continued saying “NO” to her request of wanting to take a one hour bus ride to school at 7.50am and then an hour home again in the afternoon when school didn’t start until 9.20am and we live a mere 5 minutes drive away by car.
Adding an extra 2 hours travel time to a primary school child’s day just didn’t make logical sense to the adult doing the thinking in my head.
My justification was: If she caught the bus I would need to wake her at 6.45am before her body is ready to wake up naturally (usually 8am) and she’s going to have to do that for the next 6 years anyway when travelling to high school, so it didn’t seem practical for me to facilitate her starting this routine a year early throughout her last year of primary school.
My daughter on the other hand, wanted to socialize with friends on the school bus and didn’t care about logistics and time frames. Her focus was on the fun of friends, not the practicalities surrounding the amount of time a bus ride would take out of her life.
What’s interesting to note as I look back now, is that at the same time my daughter was requesting the school bus ride, I was asking the Universe for more time alone at home to write!
It just didn’t compute within my brain that the Universe was actually delivering my request for more time of my own via my daughter’s desire to take the bus: An activity which would remove her from home an hour earlier in the mornings and have her arrive home an hour later in the afternoons.
The delivery of your request can come disguised within a hidden package, you just need to be open-minded enough to see it.
I hadn’t stopped to flip my thinking around and consider the benefits of the school bus ride because …
I was too intent on focusing on the down side that I just couldn’t see the up side.
I held so much resistance that I was oblivious to the gift and the blessing in her request.
I hadn’t done the math:
If my daughter was on the school bus, I’d have an extra hour to myself every morning and another hour every afternoon x 5 days a week = 10 extra hours to write!
There were 10 extra hours just sitting there, waiting and wanting to be delivered to me and I was SAYING NO to what I’d been asking for!
I’d been SAYING NO to what I’d been asking for!
Some months after her initial request, I needed to investigate and organize a bus ride to school for my daughter on a day when I had an early appointment and wouldn’t be able to take her to school at our usual, later time. Taking this action is when it finally dawned on me and I realized:
It’s a win/win situation …
It’s convenient for me to send her on the bus and her heart wants to do it!
The primary school bus leaves in the mornings and arrives back home in the afternoons around the same time as her sister does on the high school bus and now that both of my daughter’s take the bus, I have more time to myself to write!
“Thank You for more time to myself.”
Is there something you’ve been asking for that your actions haven’t been allowing into your life?
It’s time to stop the resistance, and JUST SAY YES to your DESIRES!
